What is Art Therapy?
Art therapy includes the use of creative techniques such as drawing, painting, collaging, sculpting and coloring to allow clients to express themselves artistically. From this therapist are able to observe the psychological and emotional backgrounds in the clients art. Credentialed art therapists then have the ability to translate the nonverbal art messages, symbols, and metaphors for clear understanding of feelings and behaviors to further resolve underlying deeper issues.
Who Can be Treated?
- People who experienced trauma, for example combat or a natural disaster.
- Individuals who have significant health challenges, including traumatic brain injuries and cancer.
- Individuals with certain conditions, such as depression, autism, and dementia.
- Art therapy is shown to reduce stress and anxiety for those who experience a significant amount of pain.
- Art therapy is also shown to assist with developing coping skills such as resolving of conflict, enhancing social skills, and enhancing ones ability to self regulate.
